1948 -- US: Margaret Chase Smith (R-Me) elected senator, first woman to serve in both houses of Congress.
1961 -- UK: Bertrand Russell, aged 89, and 32 others arrested for a major demonstration against nuclear weapons in Trafalgar Square, London.
1965 -- Russia: Andrey Sinyavsky & Yuly Daniel are arrested for writing fiction that protested against the Soviet government, Sinyaysky was sent to prison for six years.
1980 -- Adolfo Perez Esquivel, architect imprisoned & tortured in Argentina, wins the Nobel Peace Prize.
1982 -- European Parliament votes to do away with promotion & advertising of war toys.
1983 -- Guatemala: First accompaniment group from Peace Brigades International arrives to provide nonviolent witness & protection for indigenous leaders.
2002 – The United States rejoins UNESCO, the UN Human Rights organization. The US had withdrawn back in 1984, accusing the organization of being too sympathetic to Communist countries.
